About World Tapestries

home
I was 11 when I first laid eyes on real Flemish tapestry. My skin tingled; I was awed by those giant masterpieces woven in the 1500s and displayed on the walls of the Castle Gaasbeek in Belgium. My grandpa Oscar was showing me “the Old Country.” He’d come to America in 1906, a 15 year-old stable boy bringing Belgian draft horses by ship and train from his village, Vollezele, to Fairfax, Iowa. He crossed the ocean by ship 25 times and kept close ties with our Belgian family. Now, 39 years after my first visit, I’ve made four more trips to Belgium, visiting museums, castles, and cousins. I admit this story is more than a sweet memory. It’s a personal passion I am eager to share with you! owner marilyn maiser

store picture one European tapestry, once made only for the royal and wealthy, today can be enjoyed by all. Currently most high quality reproductions are woven on Jacquard looms (18th century invention) and then hand-stitched for detail and dimension. As the demand for heirloom quality tapestry continues to grow, inspired weavers are busy creating unique, exceptional wall art to enhance any room.
