Tapestries woven during the 13th through 16th centuries used three main themes: religion, mythology, and daily life of the nobles. Biblical stories were depicted in tapestry form in order to reach the multitudes of illiterate believers. Mythical figures were incorporated into tapestry scenes to reinforce important lessons and values (good vs. evil). During the 14th and 15th century the Noble Pastoral designs displayed the wealth and liesurely life of lords and ladies. These included the popular hunt scenes, grape harvests, wine making, feasts and musicians, where everyone, including the servants, wore the finest clothing and jewelry. Tapestries served an important historical role in medieval Europe by documenting victories in battle, the signing of treaties, and other important matters of state.
Below are just a few examples available in this category. World Tapestries has access to hundreds of other designs.
